Interview With Antonio Molina “El Choro”

On the occasion of his visit to Casa del Arte Flamenco during the month of June, we had the opportunity to share a moment with Antonio Molina “El Choro”, whom we have interviewed briefly during his visit to Granada.

The bailaor, born in Huelva, completed his studies thanks to a scholarship he got at the Baile Joven de Huelva Contest, which allowed him to join the Cristina Hereen Foundation.

How were the beginnings of “El Choro”?

I began dancing at the age of 3, with my father, in his academy. My theater debut was with 12 years. The first time I went to a tablao was with 14. I remember it was in the House of Memory in Seville.

Who were your Masters?

I have had many different teachers, Israel Galván, Rafael Campallo, Javier Latorre… The one that marked me most during my apprenticeship was Campallo. He was the one I spent the most time with and the one I learned the most. My studies and my learning took place at the Cristina Heeren Foundation, where I studied since I was 14 years old.

Do you remember someone who marked you especially?

Many of them, but the one that I have always liked has been Farruquito, it was the one that drove me crazy.

What impression does our tablao transmit to you?

Casa del Arte Flamenco is a great tablao. It is pure tradition. It is not the typical tablao … as I would say … for foreigners. Without a doubt, it is the artists who give the site its name. It is a very well made thing.

What are you working on now?

I currently have a new show. “Gelem”. It is a show produced by the Cristina Heerem Foundation and directed by Manuel Liñan. We premiered the show at the Festival de Jerez 2018 and the truth is that it has had a great reception.
